Endodontics is the field of dentistry that examines and treats conditions relating to the pulp of a tooth. The pulp contains nerves and blood vessels within the tooth. Teeth are usually “alive” and “painless”.
Teeth have three layers: the outer layer of enamel; dentin located in the middle layer and pulp situated in the central layer. Pulp is responsible for tooth formation but is no longer needed once the tooth has grown. This pulp may become infected and diseased. Endodontics, otherwise know as Root Canal Treatment, enables the diseased nerve to be removed. Through endodontic treatment your tooth can be saved.
Once the tooth pulp becomes irritated, bacteria will begin to grow within the pulp. This will cause pressure and give pain if untreated. Patients may also experience facial swelling. Several things can cause irritated tooth pulp, including:
- Decay deep within the tooth structure
- A large filling irritating the pulp
- A physical impact on the tooth
- Constant striking of tooth by opposite jaw
- Severe Periodontal Disease
Regardless of the cause, action must be taken to remove the infected tooth pulp. If treatment is not performed the bone surrounding the tooth will also become diseased and eventually lead to tooth loss. Dr Geoff Ross will thoroughly examine your tooth and recommend Root Canal Treatment if this is appropriate.
Root Canal Treatment can save your natural teeth. Throughout your visit we will ensure you feel as comfortable as possible. Please call to discuss any questions or concerns you may have regarding Root Canal Treatments. Contrary to popular belief, Root Canal Treatments are quite painless.
