Periodontal Disease, or Gum Disease, is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. This highly serious condition can also have significant effects on the rest of your body. It is an inflammatory disease which attacks the gums, bone and other supporting structures of the teeth. Dr Geoff Ross is dedicated to helping patients prevent Periodontal Disease through education. We will teach preventive measures enabling you to keep your teeth and gums healthy for life.
Plaque is the primary cause of Periodontal Disease. Plaque is a colourless bacteria which forms on teeth and mixes with the sugars and starches in our diet. This combination creates acids within the mouth. This acid irritates gums and causes them to become swollen, red and sore. If plaque is not removed daily, it will harden and turn into calculus (tartar). As calculus increases, gums begin to slip away from teeth. Small pockets form between teeth and gums due to this movement. Over time the pockets fill with plaque and the patient's bone structure deteriorates. This results in tooth loss.
At Dr Geoffrey Ross & Associates, Periodontal Disease is a main concern. This condition can be diagnosed through a dental examination and oral x-rays. The symptoms of Periodontal Disease include:
- Bleeding gums during brushing
- Bleeding gums whilst flossing in between teeth
- Red, sore or swollen gums
- Gums that have moved away from teeth and in between teeth
- Bad breath or bad taste within your mouth
- Loose teeth
- Discomfort when chewing
- Build up of calculus
- Sensitive teeth and gums
- Change in tooth position
Periodontal Disease can be prevented. By carrying out good oral hygiene techniques and attending regular check-ups you can save your natural teeth. Speak with Dr Geoff Ross at your next examination for the correct measures you can take to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
